A Look Inside Organized Charm's New Etsy Shop!

Posted by yanti on Friday, November 21, 2014

Last week, I made a pretty big announcement. Who decides to throw an Etsy shop into the mix with finals rapidly approaching? And not just normal finals... but the culmination of one's graduate school career? Oh, that would be me. No big deal.

And even though it has been a lot of work to get everything in the shop set up, I have to say that I am SO, SO happy that I decided to do this! I already have 10 (yes, 10!) printables available in the shop and I'm adding another one today! YAY!

Before I officially announced this shop via OC, I wanted to be sure that I could successfully create "mini" planner pages... and guess what? I can! And I, of all people, am totally thrilled about that!

So this post is dedicated to the shop! Kind of like a cheat sheet / tour / what to expect!

(And who among us doesn't love to know what to expect, right?!)

Okay, so here is everything I can think of to tell you!

A Birthday Announcement!

Posted by yanti on Wednesday, November 12, 2014

On the list of my favorite days of the year, I have to say that November 12th stands right behind December 25th. Oh, it might be helpful for you to know that November 12th is my birthday... which is why I find it just SO exciting! And if you feel like celebrating November 12th, too let me just give you a reason to: It's also Ryan Gosling's birthday.

Let's take a moment to celebrate that, shall we?

Okay, that's enough. Actually, wait... one more:

(I promise I didn't make this. It just happened to already exist... conveniently.)

Okay, moving on.

I promise that wasn't the big announcement.

The announcement is this:

Starting on Monday, November 17
Organized Charm will officially have its very own Etsy shop!

YAY! I cannot even explain how super incredibly excited about it I am! I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing... but I'm super excited about it!

Here is the story of how this came to be:

Remember how I felt like my life was all complete because I had found the planner I'd been looking for all my life? It was pretty. It was functional. It was simple enough to be customizable but detailed enough to not be boring. I was in planner heaven. And judging by the response to the photos that it appeared in, y'all really loved it, too! But that all changed in September when I found out that it was being discontinued.

Was it a sad day?

Yes.

Did I immediately panic over over the fact that I only had 3 months to find another planner?

Oh, ABSOLUTELY I did!

I am not even kidding you that I can literally find something I don't like about every single planner ever made in the history of planners. Oh, it's completely true. My poor husband went planner shopping with me the first year that we were married and I was like: "I'm looking for a planner that has a monthly view AND a weekly view. I also want it to have a place for me to write notes. And I want room to write in the margins of each week. And I don't want lines on the days. And under absolutely NO CONDITIONS can it combine the days of Saturday and Sunday into one square".

Saturdays and Sundays combined into the same square are the worst, aren't they?

I have sifted through several websites, but I finally decided to just create what it was that I was looking for!

So that's what will be available to y'all starting this Monday! Organized Charm's Etsy Shop will contain printable planner pages so that you can mix and match so that the monthly and weekly views always fit your specific needs! Over the next few months, I'll add more options! And, of course, I'll be happy to take printable requests!

Until then, please enjoy this sneak preview of a few of the printables that will be available!

ENJOY YOUR NOVEMBER 12TH! (I know I will!) :)

Do you have any requests/suggestions for what you'd like to see in the shop? Have you already found a planner for next year? If so, what are some of your favorite/least favorite parts of it?

Tips for Keeping an Academic Planner

Posted by yanti on Friday, October 3, 2014

Planners are one of those things that are just essential to life! Whether you choose to go digital with an app, use the Cloud with your computer, or you like the old fashioned paper planner... effective studying comes from effective time management and planning. Personally, I am all about paper planners! I have tried and tried but I just cant get into typing the important events of my life into a phone calendar. I write faster than I type (crazy auto correct). Plus, I never have to worry about my planner dying or having a professor (or boss) think Im texting while Im trying to enter a note about a due date.

Plus you know planners are pretty!

23 Tips for Keeping an Academic Planner

Be realistic about time management. Just because a space is empty doesnt mean it has to be filled!

Break big goals down into small tasks and schedule them (aim for a bunch of 20-minute tasks).

Consider using a Bullet Journal if you feel overwhelmed by detailed planners or tasks.

Draw attention to important dates and deadlines. Make it cute if its something youre dreading!

Every morning, write 3 things to do for the day in your planner or on a Post-It where youll see it.

Fill it with things that motivate you. Drawings, lyrics, quotes, thoughts: Make it happy to see!

Find a planner that you love. Maybe an app. Maybe a paper one. Whatever works best for you!

Its OK to trick yourself into thinking things are due earlier than they actually are. (my fave advice!)

Keep different to-do lists in your planner for different things to make your life feel more balanced.

Keep your planner open as often as possible so that its contents are visible reminders!

Keep your planner with you at all times. We always need to add things to our lists or check dates!

Prioritize assignments and projects by deadline or the amount of points theyre worth.

Say no to things you don't have time for. Too much of a good" thing can still become stressful!

Schedule tentative plans tentatively by using a pencil, Post-Its, or Washi Tape.

Set a planning time. I like Sunday nights because they give me a plan for the upcoming week.

Transfer old tasks to new days as "high priority so they dont keep getting put on the back burner!

Use a color-coding system for the different responsibilities in your life or for high to low priority tasks.

Use arrows to cross through undone tasks to move them from day to day until they are complete.

Use downtime to update your planner or write down things you want to accomplish/remember!

Use large Post-Its or paperclips to keep lists of things in your planner. Toss them when you finish.

Use Post-It Tabs to find important dates more quickly or to split your planner into categories.

Use your planner daily by making it a part of your morning routine.

Write down daily, weekly, and monthly goals and remind yourself why you do what you do!

Clearly, my planner tendencies are a leee-ttle obsessive! :)

Do you use a phone planner or a physical one? What do you like/dislike about it? Do you use any of these now? Do you have any tips to add?

Inside My Wedding Planner

Posted by yanti on Wednesday, September 10, 2014

I am so excited to be celebrating my three-year anniversary with my husband today! I remember our wedding like it was yesterday: The cake. The flowers. The music. The dress. The endless e-mails. The weekly emotional breakdown followed by lets just forget the wedding and get married today. But do you want to know what my favorite part was? Well, aside from becoming Mrs. Horton, my favorite part of the whole experience was the planner! *swoon*

Weddings are a pretty big deal. Even if youre planning to have a small wedding there is still a BIG amount of planning that goes into it (unless, of course, you are planning to do it Carrie Bradshaw style at the Courthouse)! You need checklists, timelines, a place to save receipts, contact info, scheduling, and of course, a patient fianc to talk you down off the ledge every night while you plan it all! Even though I would never want to do it again, I do (occasionally) miss all of that organization and planning!

As my florist (slash therapist for nine months) told me, planning a wedding is "fun stress. Even though Im pretty sure I immediately burst into tears at the time, I now realize that he was right. It is fun stress! And at the end of it, you get a totally fantastic party! YAY!

oh, and a lifetime commitment to your favorite person ever :)

Visit Barnes & Noble and browse through their selection of wedding planners (right next to the self-help section. Convenient, right?). There are big ones, little ones, simple ones, giant binders just all kinds of crazy choices! Yall, there is even a book that is only made up of checklists! Look through all of them until you find one that looks like it can help you accomplish exactly what you want!

Here is the one I used: The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner. I chose it because it was small and light enough that I could carry it around in my purse (because believe me, you will NOT want to leave the house without it)! But it was also detailed enough that I could keep everything in one place!

This planner was such a huge help to me because it provided several checklists (yay!), notes pages, places for inspiration, etiquette, worksheets, and budget trackers! It really guided me and helped me envision exactly what I wanted the wedding to look like. PLUS, there was a timeline-style checklist (which was the inspiration for my Semester Assignment Spreadsheet, btw)! Yes, please!

In addition to this planner, I kept ONE wedding folder, where I kept all of my contracts and receipts. My florist/wedding therapist also told me about this idea. Take a regular two-pocket folder (like, $1 at Target), write to-do on the left side, and done on the right side. Put all of your contracts/bills on the left side until they are paid, then move them to the right side. This way, theyre all always together. (Does that system sound familiar? Its the one I now use for organizing my class folders!)

I also created a wedding folder in my e-mail inbox to save all correspondence with different vendors or potential vendors. This is VERY helpful because it allows you to look back over details discussed, prices negotiated, dates/times, etc. Remember that, while this is your big, special day, it is also a business for your vendors, so you need to stay on top of things at all times!

When should you splurge? PHOTOGRAPHY! Next to catering, photography was our most expensive thing. Our original photographer got pregnant (and had twins on our wedding day)! So we actually had to go outside of Memphis to find a photographer that was less than, like $6,000. We found the MOST amazing team (yes, team) of photographers who did an absolutely amazing job!

The other reason photography is so important is because you want to find someone who will really capture your personality as a couple. The photographers that we used felt like they had been our friends forever, which kept us from being stiff or awkward in the photos. Even better? They were just so much fun and blended right in at the wedding, so they were able to get a ton of great candid shots of the reception!

Another place to splurge? Your dress. I never really had a plan for a dream wedding when I was little. I never really cared about what my hair or makeup or dress would look like. I thought I would just be happy with whatever. UNTIL I started trying on dresses! I literally fell in LOVE with one of the first ones I tried on. And even though it was crazy expensive, I never even thought about regretting it!

Reception location is another big, big deal but it doesnt necessarily have to cost a lot of money. The thing about the reception is that the location just has to fit the look/needs of the wedding! A good friend of mine recently had a private wedding ceremony in an art gallery of a local Memphis museum. We are going to a backyard wedding in a few weeks. Two summers ago, I attended the cutest and quaint wedding on a rooftop of some condos downtown. Use your creativity and make this exactly what you want!

The Ceremony. Kind of a big deal. Stick to the basics. I cannot even imagine how stressful it would have been for me to write my own vows on top of everything else. Also, choose an officiant who knows you personally, if possible! It will just make everything seem more relaxed. Last but not least, have you ever been to one of those weddings where there are as many people on stage as there are in the audience? Did you know that there actually is a rule about how many wedding party attendants there should be? Yep. Its 1 per every 50 guests! This keeps a good balance of attendants and guests!

Just like everything else in life, the better planned out your wedding is, the more you will be able to ENJOY it on the day that it actually happens! And even if things go wrong (like the groom forgetting to the rings or the bride forgetting to eat two examples I toootally just made up. *wink wink*), at the end of the day, youll be married to the person that you love the most in this whole world!

And it doesnt get much more perfect than that! :)

Back to School Shopping List

Posted by yanti on Saturday, August 23, 2014

This post brought to you by Brita. All opinions are 100% mine.

You know that commercial that was on a few years ago with the dad skipping through the school supply aisle, while his reluctant kids trail behind and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" plays in the background? Every year, when it’s time for back to school shopping, I totally feel like that guy!

And everyone knows that the making of a school supply list is almost as fun as the shopping for the school supplies themselves! SOOO... Here is a list of my essential back to school supplies (alphabetically, of course)!

2014 Fall Semester Essentials:

BRITA® WATER BOTTLE

I know. I know. I’m like the only person in America who didn't have a water filter yet. But let me start by saying that I live in Memphis... which is known for having pretty good water… so, I didn’t think it would make a big difference. However, in an effort to keep myself hydrated and feel more energized this summer, I bought my first Brita® filter water bottle (available at Target)! Oh my gosh, y'all... it makes a huge difference!

The filter reduces impurities, so the difference between drinking water through the filter and the faucet is incredible. Plus, I’m saving a TON of money by not having to buy bottles of water all the time while I’m running around (and reducing waste)! Not only that, but I can put anything in it, which is awesome. My husband has literally been filling this bottle up with water then pouring it into his glass before dinner… so I guess that’s a subtle hint that we should get the pitcher, too!

COLOR-CODED PENS

Last fall, I wrote a post on how I color-code my planner. And I was all about these Cosmo pens from the Write Dudes. Well, I still love those but one of my Kindergarteners gave me the Paper Mate Flair pens as an end-of-the-year gift last year and I have become 100% obsessed! It’s like writing with a super thin, super pretty, little Sharpie. I am just all about these pens right now! If you want to check them out, I've seen them at Target, Office Max, and Office Depot!

-

FLASH DRIVE

Over the summer, I mentioned that I left my old flash drive in the USB port at FedEx Office. Saddest day of my life. Luckily, I keep backups of important things in my computer and online, so I didn’t really lose anything too critical. Regardless, I’ll need one for this semester and I typically find the best prices on Amazon!

-

FOLDERS

Organizing my new class folders is probably one of my favorite parts of the new semester! I just use one 2-pocket folder for each class (here is how I organize them). At the end of the semester, I save the ones that are still in pretty good shape and reuse them for the next semester to save money!

-

HIGHLIGHTERS

I have literally been using the same brand of highlighters (Foray) forever (probably longer, actually). My most-used colors are yellow and pink. When I begin an assignment, I highlight it in yellow on my Semester Spreadsheet and in my planner. When I complete it, I highlight it in pink. This way, I can see what I’m finished with, what I’m currently working on, and which projects I need to start!

-

INDEX CARDS

I used to just use index cards for making an assignment timeline but I have gotten SO into making flashcards lately! I don’t know why I never really made them before. I started over the summer when I made some to learn the menu items of the restaurant where I was working. After that, I used them to help me study for my certification exam. And right now, I’m actually taking a break from making some for my next certification exam. Less than $1 at Target? I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner!

-

MECHANICAL PENCILS

Year after year, these are one of my main staples of the semester. I use them for taking notes. This makes it a lot easier for me to not freak out when my professors give us things out of order, get sidetracked, or leave things out only to add them at the end of the lecture.

Plus, it keeps me focused instead of worrying about whether I should make this heading pink or that bullet point purple (which is exactly what I will do if I try to color-code notes as I write them)! I can do all of that when I REWRITE my notes later. I also use these when I'm on-the-go and writing tentative plans in my planner, because they can just be erased and replaced with more permanent plans later.

-

MINI-STAPLER & STAPLES

Speaking of "staples", it seriously never fails that every time something is due in class, about 34 people start to ask “Hey... does anyone have a stapler?”. How people show up to class ready to turn in an assignment that isn’t stapled, I have no idea. But it is always awesome to be that person that saves the day! Also, by having your own stapler, you won’t have to worry about ever being that person (or using the germ-y one in the library). Plus, Target has PINK staples (of course they do)! And why use silver when you could use pink?!

-

NOTEBOOK

Notebooks are another thing I’ve received some questions about lately. Some of y’all have asked whether I get a different notebook for each class, or use one multi-subject notebook for every class. I've tried both but, for the sake of simplicity, I just get one notebook and use it for every class.

When I first started college, I kept looseleaf paper in a binder, which was just too bulky. Then, I began to buy a separate notebook for each class. However, some notebooks would get completely used up 8 weeks into the semester while others barely had 8 pages of notes by December! Now I just keep everything in one notebook and fold down pages, write in the corner of the page, or use Post-It tabs to find what I’m looking for.

-

PLANNER

And here it is: The Holy Grail of school supplies. Erin Condren? Kate Spade? Lily Pulitzer? MayBooks? You know, you can’t just rush into a big decision like this. It really takes a lot of research, trial and error, and maybe some modifications to make a planner totally work for YOU.

Here is a list of some of my favorites and here is what I use. Plus, your school bookstore will have some and so does Target (seriously, what don’t they have?). Make sure you check out all of your available sources before committing to one planner for the next year of your life! I mean, choosing a good planner is practically as important as choosing a good husband, right?

-

POST-ITS

I have to admit that I am a little Post-It crazy. I have the 2x2 ones, which I usually write my to-do list on each morning and stick to the back of my phone before I leave for the day. I have the smaller Post-It tabs which I use to mark pages in my notebook/textbooks while I’m reading/researching/studying for school. And I also use these to mark important dates in my planner.

We could all always use more Post-Its!

-

PRINTABLE PROGRESS TRACKER

I’ve had a few people ask about the weekly task pads that I sometimes get from Target’s Dollar Spot. The tricky thing about that little section of the store is that you just never know what you’re going to find! I might walk through there 10 times and not see any to-do lists at all. Then, I’ll go in there and there are, like, 20 different choices!

If you're looking for something like that (but a little free-er), then check out this printable that I made last semester! Same concept, plus there is a place to write down what you actually accomplished each day, too! It also prints out 16 sheets (each with a different quote)... 1 for each week of the semester!

-

TEXTBOOKS

Well, obviously, textbooks are a pretty essential part of back to school shopping! I always, ALWAYS recommend checking out Slugbooks to make sure that you’re getting the best price! If you’re thinking about getting an e-book, you should really check out McGraw-Hill’s SmartBooks, too! It’s an interactive e-book that quizzes you throughout the chapter and assesses your learning of the chapter!

-

Ahhhh... listmaking AND organizing AND an excuse to buy new school supplies?!

It really is the most wonderful time of the year! Until all of the post-Christmas organization sales, that is. :)

What are some of the essentials from your shopping list this semester?!

Where are your favorite places to get your school supplies?

Freebie Printable: Weekly To-Do List & Progress Tracker

Posted by yanti on Monday, February 10, 2014

Today is an exciting day in the world of Organized Charm
I have created my very first printable and I am oh-so-excited to introduce it to yall!

Earlier this week, I discussed how I organize my planner. One of the very most important parts of my planner is the the repurposed Meal Planning section that is now dedicated to my weekly school assignments.

But you know what I realized? Unless you have the exact same planner that I have, you dont have those sheets for keeping up with your weekly assignments.

Until now :)

Here are 16 weeks (a whole semester) of Weekly Assignment Lists!

They are nearly exactly like mine, except that I added a couple of extra little things!
(so now, I actually like them better than mine)

Here is what they include and how I would choose to organize them:

Week
Fill in the dates of each new academic week.

Main Goal
Look at your week and state your BIG GOAL for the week. Maybe a to start on a big upcoming project or researching a major topic

Days
I left this section blank so that you can start your new academic week on whatever day works out  best for you. This semester, everything I have is due on Thursdays, so Im starting new projects and readings on Fridays and Thursdays are my day to have it all complete. If you think better doing the more traditional Sun-Sat or Mon-Sun, you can do that, too! Its all up to you!

To-Do
This is where I put each and every little task that I need to have complete by the end of the week. Sometimes, I break down my assignments into the different days I want to work on them and sometimes I just fill it in continually, depending on what I didnt get finished on the previous day.

Done
Kind of the most important part. Yet, somehow, this is the thing that always seems to be left off of to-do lists! WRITE DOWN YOUR PROGRESS! How much time did you give yourself and what the heck did you do with it? This section holds you accountable for how you spend your time.

Finally, I added some of my favorite little motivational phrases at the bottom. If you keep your sheets in order, these should go along pretty well with where in the semester you are!

(And obviously, these lists can be used for anything not just school related tasks).

I am SO EXCITED to hear about how yall use these!

ENJOY! :)
