Green BEAN Delivery

Posted by yanti on Tuesday, April 8, 2014

We have been ordering Green BEAN delivery for almost a year now (here is my first post about it), so when they asked me if I would write a review, of course I said yes!

I have been trying to eat more local, organic, and seasonal for years now.  Green BEAN makes it easy, you just place your order online and it arrives at your door step on your scheduled delivery day!  And delivery is FREE for orders totaling $35 or more.  Everything is fully customizable from how much is in your bin, what is in your bin, and how often you get your bin.  Green BEAN is the only company I have found that offers this much flexibility and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

You set up what you want your default bin to be; small, medium, large produce bins or pick a produce and grocery mixed bin (that's what my bin is), and you can change it when you are placing your order.  You also set your default frequency to every week or every other week.  I have mine set to every other week so I don't end up with more than I can eat during the summer when I have my garden and CSA veggies too.  I can add or turn off bins easily, so right now I am getting a bin every week even though my default is every other week, and when we go on vacation or won't be home on delivery day it is easy to turn it off.

Every week starts with a standard assortment of produce and every week that assortment is different (changes with seasonality).  You can keep the default, change everything, or do something in between.  I always end up making some kind of adjustment.  Each fruit or veggie that is available that week is listed in a drop down box with whether it is local, grown in the US, or grown in Mexico as well as whether it is organic, sustainably grown, or conventionally grown.  Just about everything is organic and grown in the US, but there are some things like bananas or mangoes that are really difficult to be both.

After that, you can add grocery items no matter what type of bin you have.  I use the 'local artisans' category almost exclusively to get local milk, yogurt, eggs, butter, meat, granola, coffee (roasted locally), and more.  One time I got a little carried away and ended up with three bins in one week!  (One of those bins was my Thanksgiving turkey.)

When I first signed up for Green BEAN, I had some concerns, but after a few weeks I was hooked!  Some of my original concerns included keeping everything cold.  It's one thing if produce gets a little warm, it grows outside and half of it shouldn't be stored in the fridge any way.  It's another thing for dairy and meat to get warm.  When my first bin arrived with in a shipping cooler with ice packs and everything was still very cold hours after delivery, I was no longer concerned.  I also wondered about variety of produce, since I sometimes get 'stuck' with my CSA and end up having to order too much of one thing.  After a week or two of figuring out how to fully customize my bin, I almost had too much variety!  (The local produce selection does decrease during the winter, there are still a lot of options to choose from.)

My last concern was pricing, was it more expensive to order through Green BEAN than just going to the grocery store?  I would have to drive to the other side of town to have some of the options that I can easily select from Green BEAN, so in convenience, time, and gas... it definitely saves me money.  For the stuff I can get from the Kroger down the street from me... when comparing apples to apples (literally, hehe), Green BEAN is still less expensive in many cases.

If you're trying to eat more fresh fruits and veggies, make sure they are in your house when you're hungry!  It's easy to grab the junk food if that is the only thing in your pantry.  With Green BEAN, you will always have healthy options to snack on and plan your weekly meal plans around.  If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Everyone at work has been taking time off for their kids' Spring Breaks.  Man, I miss those days...I never really went any where on Spring Break, but it was always nice to have that pause from the day-to-day.  I hear a long weekend calling my name because two days just isn't enough!

Had a fabulous girls weekend with the fam.  We literally shopped until we dropped... then we rested, fueled up, had a drink, and shopped some more!  And I got to spend some time with this little guy... who added the little rubber duckie from my 'drunk duck' drink to his duckie collection.  :)

When I got home, I could see my first daffodil of the season from down the road.  I literally jumped out of my car and took a picture.  Daffodils are just so bright and cheerful.  The ultimate sign that winter is over, and therefore, my favorite flower!

Alright, since the weekend is over, it is menu planning time...

What are you planning to make this week?

Top 10 Organizing Blogs

Posted by yanti

Last week, I received an e-mail from a charming reader named Maya asking for my favorite organizing resources. This was such an easy question because I love reading about others organizing projects! I e-mailed back with my 5 favorites but the more I though about it, the more I just wanted to add and add to the list!

Here is a list of my top 10 favorite organizing blog/websites!

This website mainly focuses on organizing your home (you can search by room), finances, and planner! I really love her systems for organizing paperwork and cleaning. Also, she has a whole section on creating (and sticking to) a budget!

I love the look of this website. I mean, it just looks organized! The photos are beautiful and there is a ton of wonderful inspiration.

If you are having a hard time keeping your home clean and decluttered, this is the site for you! FlyLady offers a daily to-do list to help you keep your sinks shining (literally)! She also implements the philosophy of a little at a time so that everything seems manageable!

This is actually the homepage on my computer. Every time I get online, there is a new post about how to be more productive, happier, less-stressed, and just all-around healthier! This is a great resource for organizing your daily habits and time management!

This is probably the best organizing blog ever. I could literally stay on this site for hours. She mainly focuses on home organization and everything she does is 100% incredible!

This is an organizational series on Lauren Conrads blog. You will find posts like Creative Storage Solutions, Tips for Organizing Your Craft Supplies, and Charitable Closet Cleaning. And obviously, everything is pretty because its Lauren Conrad :)

If you have a tumblr. account, you should definitely follow this blog! You will receive daily doses of study tips! And if you dont have a tumblr. account, you should create one now.

This is kind of ongoing series written by Carly Heitlinger of The College Prepster. She talks about how to organize her studying habits, scheduling routines, and various other time management systems. These are actually my favorite posts of hers to read!

(or POYEL) is basically a blog within a blog! Steph of Modern Parents Messy Kids wrote out her perfect plan for organizing her life and has been taking steps to achieve it ever since! She focuses on meal planning, finances, scheduling, and cleaning systems.

If you are looking for the king of all organizing sites, this is it. There are literally hundreds of no-nonsense, straight to the point organization tips! And there are SO MANY topics that it is basically impossible NOT to find what youre looking for!

BONUS: This is not necessarily an organizing website, but it has tons of inspiration and tips on how to de-stress and stay focused, which definitely leads to more productivity:

Because sometimes we just need to organize our thought process! If you ever feel anxious, overwhelmed, or like you just cant get things under control, definitely check out this blog! Leo talks about eliminating and simplifying things and how to manage our time better.

I know yall must have a ton of favorites! Please post them in the comments!!

Mostly just because I want to visit them, too! Thanks :)

Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Granola Bar - total time 1 hour

Posted by yanti on Wednesday, April 2, 2014

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I've never been one to skip breakfast, I would never make it to lunch without gnawing my arm off. So to keep my hunger at bay, I start most mornings with a quick parfait. I loooove this granola I get from Green Bean delivery. It is so yummy! And I have tried a lot of different granolas, definitely all of the ones with chocolate in them. But this one is definitely the best, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, and a little chocolate. Perfect way to start the day... top it with some berries and yogurt... even better!

DSC08291

We go through this stuff like crazy, like, a couple bags every week. It's kind of ridiculous. But we don't always have time in the morning even for a simple parfait (I easily lose track of time before I have had my coffee... even after sometimes... so mornings can go from a leisurely stroll to a mad dash out the door pretty quickly). So what's a girl going to eat when she's run so fast out the door that she forgot to brush her hair and her phone is still sitting on the kitchen counter? Granola bars! A quick grab and go solution.

You could probably just take premade granola and bake it into bars. But where is the fun in that? This way you control everything that goes into the bars and can feel good about what you're eating. No added sugar and tons of protein and fiber... and so yummy... just like McCabe's granola.

It takes a bit of time from start to finish, but it's mostly hands off time. I walked my dog while everything was cooling, came back, covered them in chocolate, and then went back out with Snoop to finish our walk. Probably only spent 15 minutes in the kitchen. Easy peasy!

4 Things to Organize in April

Posted by yanti on Tuesday, April 1, 2014

The new month is upon is! You know, the one where we're FINALLY supposed to see some flowers and spring-like weather? I, for one, couldn't be happier!

And what fun is a new month without new organizing projects?! Riiight? ;)

Here are the 4 things I'm planning to organize in April! You can join me in these projects or choose your own!

1. My car
I am one of those people who tends to drive around with everything I own in the back if my car. Whether it's change, makeup, water bottles, or winter coats... I somehow take it all with me everywhere I go!

2. My clothes
Moving is deinitely the perfect motivation to get started on this. I have been hoarding clothes for years and it's just time to let some go.

3. My finances
Recently, one of my students' moms was raving about Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University and telling me how ORGANIZED her finances are now! I definitely need some of that!

4. My purse
I feel like I don't even need to explain this. You know what Im talking about.

So, there they are! My 4 organizational projects for the month! I am SUPER excited about tackling some of these daily productivity barriers!

What are your 4 organizational goals for April?!

Ill post my progress all throughout the month of April, so feel free to e-mail me photos of your organizing projects and Id be glad to post about them, too! :)

March Vignettes

Posted by yanti on Sunday, March 30, 2014

Big things are happening around the Horton household!
So, I have chosen the last Sunday of the month to keep yall updated on all of the new changes
all while providing a month in review-ish style post!

If this is your first time here, just stick with me while I get a little self-centered.
I promise, I usually talk about organizing something! :)

In the month of March

We spent Spring Break really staging our home

I cannot even begin to describe all of the work that goes into doing this! But you know what? I have discovered that I absolutely LOVE the staging process! It is just all about cleaning, clearing, decluttering, eliminating, and simplifying

We had a snow week.

Yes, you read that right. The week before Spring Break, we received, like, 2 inches of snow (maybe) and were out of school for almost a whole week (some of the more rural schools did get the whole week out). Please ignore the horribleness of these photos. They were my pathetic attempt to capture the snow outside. I have to say that I was pretty thrilled since snow in Memphis almost never sticks!

My students were precious (as usual)!

My sweet Kindergarteners are starting to write and have used their newly-acquired skill to write me notes on notes on notes! Here is one of my favorites (ignore the fact that I placed it on my kitchen counter and got it wet).

And let me just preface this by saying that they are all obsessed with Despicable Me and the Minions.
(I mean, who isnt?)

There was a minion. Her name was Mrs. Horton, The Minion. She was happy."

I love you. From Paolo"

Obviously, I spent too much money on pretty office supplies at Target

No further explanation required.

WE SOLD OUR HOUSE!

Which was my biggest goal for the beginning of the year! I was hoping it would happen in March and it happened in March! The timing literally could not have been any better and we are just so thankful go God! This was a HUGE things for me to mark off of my to-do list!

And here are some posts from March.

In the comments of the Time Management System post, a reader requested that I write a post on procrastination and how to deal with it. Well, when I started researching the *causes* of procrastination I found so much useful information that I just went ahead and wrote two posts! So, March kind of turned out to be an anti-procrastination month!

I am always happy to write requested posts, so dont be afraid to ask!

We have also begun the official countdown to our moving day.

The location is still top secret (mainly because there isnt a specific location yet!). We are just so excited about this time in our lives and cant wait to see where God opens up doors! Meanwhile, I am super excited about all of the new organization projects (and lists) that come along with moving!

As I do every year, I chose Memphis to win the National Championship.

And as it does every year, my bracket has become irrelevant. Oh, well maybe next year :)

So, thats what happened in the oh-so-exciting life of Kirsten during March.

Tell me about some of the things yall did in March!

Did you do an awesome job on your midterms? Have an awesome Spring Break? Or make some cool plans for the summer?

I LOVE getting to know my readers, so let me know in the comments! :)

Do One Thing at a Time

Posted by yanti on Thursday, March 27, 2014

Have you noticed that people have really been putting an emphasis on work smarter not harder lately? You may or may not have researched what the heck that means, but this is one of the primary focuses of that statement: Doing one thing at a time.

It seems like Ive read research on this everywhere lately. Long gone are the days when we celebrate people who were on the phone, while writing a report, while watching the news. Because, as we now know, someone who is doing all of those things at once is not doing any of them well

And you may think, I dont do that. But what about your phone? It has become the new face of multi-tasking and we dont even realize it! Twitter notifications, Facebook notifications, Snap Chat notifications, Texts, E-Mails and of course, the good ole phone call. Its a little much. Its multi-tasking. And most of the time, we dont even realize were doing it!

But we need our phones so how do we stop?

Tony Schwartz of the Harvard Business Review suggests 3 simple solutions to multi-tasking that we can all implement in our daily lives:

1. Maintain Discipline.
Set a timer for 45 minutes (not a full hour), put your phone on silent (or in a different room), and spend that 45 minutes COMPLETELY FOCUSED on your task! Then spend 15 minutes reviewing what you completed, do a quick check of phone notifications, grab some water, etc. When the 15 minutes is up, start all over again!

2. Stop Demanding or Expecting Instant Responses.
Just because you received an e-mail or a text doesnt mean that you have to drop whatever youre in the middle of and respond immediately. And you know what? I think people who expect to receive immediate responses come across as pretty self-absorbed. Everyone is busy. Everyone is stressed. Everyone has deadlines. Dont let others kill your productivity!

3. Renew.
Have you ever noticed that sitting at a desk and studying for hours is one of the worst feelings in the world? Thats because it is. Not only that, its also one of the least productive things in the world! Most of our brains can only completely focus for less than an hour. However, when you take breaks, it fills up your focus to 100% again.

Do something to refresh your brain! Stand outside, grab some water, do some yoga poses, lay down in the floor, draw a picture, do whatever will relax your body and brain for a few minutes! It may feel unproductive, but its actually one of the most productive things you could possibly do!

So this weekend, as you find yourself spending extra time writing lesson plans, finishing up school projects, or even hanging out with your friends (this is the one Im the most guilty of), be ALL THERE. In that one thing. And just do it really well! :)

Do you agree with this or has multi-tasking worked for you in the past? Also, I love to hear about study strategies, so let me know if you have a system that works well for you!
